Baking soda is touted as the least expensive and safest tooth whitener available, but is this really true?

Some facts about baking soda:

• It is a chemical compound known as sodium bicarbonate
• It dissolves easily in water
• It can dissolve plaque and stains on the tooth surface by a chemical reaction
• It can’t remove “deep” stains, such as those caused by medication or genetics

Unlike baking soda, toothpaste provides the added protection of fluoride, which is known to be a cavity deterrent with proper dental hygiene. Toothpaste can also have a bleaching ingredient that will work as a whitening type of treatment.
