Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a specially made coating for teeth that is either clear or white in color. The coating is brushed onto teeth and quickly bonds into the depressions, shielding the enamel from harmful bacteria and plaque build up.

Everyone with permanent teeth can benefit from the application of dental sealants. We often recommend that kids growing in their permanent molars get dental sealants. Kids’ oral hygiene is always hard to keep up with; taking preventative measures against cavities is a strategic way to enhance your child’s oral health.

The sooner dental sealants are applied, the more effective they will be. Once a tooth starts to decay, there are no natural remedies to fix it. It will eventually require a cavity filling. Applying a tooth sealant at a young age and as a young adult is a smart way to avoid the cost of cavities and the long-term effects of tooth decay.

Sealants can be easily applied after any routine teeth cleaning.

Here’s how it works:

• The hygienist thoroughly cleans your teeth.
• Each tooth is dried, and a unique solution is swabbed on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This solution helps the sealant quickly bond with the teeth.
• Your teeth with be rinsed and dried again before the application of the sealant.
• Your hygienist will brush each tooth individually with the tooth sealant to ensure that it is fully covered and protected.
• At Wayzata Dental, we also use a bright curing light (as shown on the right) to help quickly harden the sealant.
• You’re ready to go!

Dental sealants can last anywhere from 5-10 years before they are in need of reapplication. This makes it a great investment for oral health and cavity prevention.
