There are two types of indirect fillings – inlays and onlays. Inlays are similar to fillings but the entire work lies within the cusps on the chewing surface of the tooth. Onlays are more extensive than inlays, covering one or more cusps.
Inlays and onlays are more durable and last much longer than traditional fillings. They are created through indirect metal-free restorations that are fabricated from a 3D scan of the tooth, designed on a computer and milled from a block of porcelain.

These restorations strengthen the tooth structure and are made of ceramic and are more resistant to staining than composite resin material. This material is high quality and generally lasts more than 15 years.
These restorations are often considered in high-stress areas and when there is not enough tooth structure remaining to support a filling but the tooth is not so severely damaged that it needs a crown.
